The word “systems thinking” can mean different things for people. It is important to note. The discipline of system thought is more than a set of instruments and methods – it is also a theory that underlies it. Many beginners like causal loop charts and control flight simulators are drawn to technologies in the expectation that these technologies will assist them in coping with persistent business problems. Structures thought, however, is also the sensitivity of the systemic existence of the environment in which we live; the understanding of the role of the process in creating the conditions we face; knowledge of the powerful laws of structures which we do not understand.
Thinking technology is also a diagnostic tool. Like in the medical profession, accurate diagnosis accompanies successful treatment. In this sense, system thinking is a systematic method for a more thorough and reliable analysis of issues before acting. This helps us to ask informed questions before we conclude.
Systems analysis also requires shifting from events or data to behavioral overtime trends and processes underlying these trends and events. We will extend the options available, and create more meaningful, long-term solutions for chronic issues by identifying and modifying systems that are not well served (including our mental models and perceptions).
Generally, the viewpoint of systems thinking requires curiosity, insight, compassion, preference, and courage. This approach requires the ability to look at the situation in more detail, realize that we interconnect, realize that an issue often includes multiple solutions, and championship approaches that might not be common.
