Types of Mental Models-10/10/10 Rule

The 10/10/10 method is highly applicable to the decisions that we have to make daily. Without a doubt, there are many instances when we find ourselves perturbed, not knowing the best decision to make. Unfortunately, this leaves us making hasty decisions that we end up regretting. To save you from the dilemma, the 10/10/10 method should be utilized. With this method, people are not only forced to consider the short-term consequences of their actions, but they also reflect on the long-term effects.

The bitter truth concerning decision-making is that people find it easy to make decisions that affect them in the short-term. Frankly, it is easy to decide whether something will benefit you in the next 10 minutes or so. However, a problem arises when people should make decisions that appear less impactful at first, but in the long run are beneficial.

When using the 10/10/10 method to help you make informed decisions, it requires you to ask yourself several questions. These questions are based on how you will feel after 10 minutes, 10 months and 10 years. So, when thinking about going on a trip with friends, you should begin by asking yourself how you will feel 10 minutes after paying for the trip. Of course, you might be skeptical about the whole idea of meeting up with friends and the expenses involved. However, take another moment to consider how you will feel in 10 months after you have spent time with your friends. Unquestionably, there is a good chance that you will feel good about the time you spent to catch up with them after a long time. Likewise, you will want to treasure these beautiful memories in 10 years. So, ultimately, you will decide to go on this trip because you know the value it adds to your life.

If hitting the gym consistently is something that you have been struggling with, the 10/10/10 rule is applicable. This method will motivate you to resist the urge to eat junk. Think about it this way, sure eating junk food will only make you feel good for a short period. After eating a junk meal for 10 minutes, you will feel satisfied. What about 10 in 10 months or 10 years? Will you still have similar attitudes toward such meals? There is a high probability that you will regret eating junk because of the negative effects it has on your body in the long run.

The 10/10/10 rule helps you to make sound decisions without allowing emotions to get the best of you. Sometimes emotions tend to blind us from making the right decisions. Thus, if you can get emotions out of your decision-making process, you will nurture your critical thinking skills. Did you know that this is how Ray Dalio, Warren Buffet, and Charlie Munger manage to succeed in prolonged periods? An important lesson that you can learn from them is never to allow emotions to cloud your judgment. With the 10/10/10 mental model, this is possible.
