Law of the Instrument

According to Abraham Kaplan, the Law of Instrument is going to be important. This one is going to be based on the idea that if you give a hammer to a young boy, then the boy will establish that everything coming on the way will require pounding.

We can look at this in a similar manner as if you only have one framework for thinking about the world, then you are going to try to take each problem that comes to you into that framework, and that doesn’t always work. But if you have a set of mental models to work with, your potential for finding a solution is going to increase.

One thing that is also interesting with this one is that the problem you are facing is going to be vividly evident as you increase your expertise in a specific area. It is dangerous to specialize in one mental model since you will over-rely on it and such will be leading to your downfall.

This is why we need to work to have a larger set of mental models, you are going to better your capacity to solve a lot of problems. This is because you provide yourself with a variety of collections for obtaining the answer that is right.

When your toolbox is full of lots of different mental models, you will be better set up to choose the best tool for the given situation. The more mental models you have to work with, the greater your range and variety of thought and as a result the more the opportunities you are able to identify.
