Succeed in persuading others

How to persuade others

In order to succeed in persuading others, you will have to take into account the above shortcomings and work to eliminate them. Build your confidence and conviction by learning as much about the issue as possible. Of course, many arguments happen apropos of nothing but probably most of the time, particularly with people we have personal and professional relationships with, the issues we disagree on will be well-established as part of the context of that relationship. You should also enter every argument with the knowledge that you can win it but still have the modesty to know that there is a possibility that you could be wrong. Actively listen to your opponent, and be dynamic enough to adapt to what they are saying and ready to concede where their point is superior to yours.

You also have to make a point of being a likable and generally trustworthy person – be gentle and nice to your opponent, and do not resort to heavy-handed or dishonest tactics. You should also build your presentation technique in order for your arguments to fly. Some tips and tricks you can use to improve your technique: humor is a powerful tool in communication.

It helps to lubricate the gears and creates a sense of camaraderie that makes persuasion so much easier. Try to pepper your arguments with appropriate jokes – accounting for the gravity of the situation you are arguing over of course. The point is not to turn the argument into a standup routine but simply to add a bit of levity where it is suitable.

Another tip is to be expressive – use your facial and body language to communicate as well. Words will only get you so far because a huge part of communication is non-verbal. Show your earnestness, passion, irritation and incredulity as they come, and use your hands to make gestures and animate your points. Be careful not to appear overly theatrical or threatening, though. Overdoing it can be just as much of a turn-off.

Use your environment to your advantage. Point to things around you and use props that illustrate your point as you need to. If you have a writing medium available to you, use it. Write things down and use diagrams – that helps to imprint ideas in people’s minds.
