Uses of Critical Thinking

Critical thinking is not limited to a particular field or a particular group of people; it transcends domains and continents: everyone has the ability to engage in critical thinking. However, due to one reason or another, many of us often fail to utilize this ability. To give you the motivation to become a critical thinker, let us look at the importance of critical thinking.

1: Promotes Creativity

Creativity and critical thinking are two pieces in a pond. Here is how the two relate. To come up with something new, or to make something old better, you first need to study it, and form an opinion or idea on how to go about it.

You will need to research in a bid to understand which functions your creation will have, and how that creation will solve a problem or meet a certain need. Critical thinking helps you ask the difficult questions. It helps you come up with the best products and put forth your best efforts. Critical thinking allows you to ‘think outside the box’.

2: Initiates Self-Reflection

To achieve growth, and live a meaningful life, you must shine light on what drives you, what is important to you as an individual, and how that relates to the world at large. Critical thinking enables you to reflect on your values and the values of your decisions. You will not ‘hide from yourself’; instead, you will engage in self-evaluation, which will go a long way in helping you determine choices and decisions you make in your life.

3: Sets the Foundation for Science

Without critical thinking, it would be impossible to make advancements in science and technology. When it comes to questioning theories and searching for answers (thinking critically), scientists and researchers are at the forefront. Over the years, ‘we’ have discovered new methods of doing things, and improved upon old methods. Science relies on critical thinkers to come up with formulas and answers; it relies on data and proof of concept, concepts that call for critical thinking.

4: Allows Democracy to Flourish

True democracy flourishes when individuals can voice opinions, ask questions, and seek answers. Democracy provides governmental checks and balances; it allows citizens of a country to hold their leaders accountable.

Democracy cannot flourish in silence; after all, we have varied opinions. Critical thinking allows individuals to state their opinions and listen to the opinions of others, weigh these opinions, and arrive at a peaceful solution.

We often fight not because we disagree but because we feel as if our concerns are being neglected or trivialized. Critical thinking allows people from all occupations to look at issues from various angles, and arrive at the best possible solution.

5: Fits in With the Global Economy

Long gone are the days when batter trade of goods and services with neighbours was the ‘it’ thing. Today, the world has opened up to accommodate anyone with the means to communicate with buyers and sellers. Today, companies and organizations are constantly looking for new markets in a bid to stay in business.

However, due to cultural differences, political climate, geography, among other things, new markets present new challenges. Critical thinking enables companies and individuals to find ways to overcome such challenges, engage in global business, and make profit.

6: Enhances Presentation Skills

Life may call upon you to give a presentation at work, school, at a seminar, during a course, at a religious gathering, or even at a family meeting. To give a great presentation, you need to employ critical thinking. Critical thinking equips you with the skills to give clear and systematic presentations where you state your points, give the reasoning behind your points, and provide proof for your stand on specific subjects. By using critical thinking, when called to do so, you are also able to defend your position. When giving a presentation, you should use various resources such as graphs, charts and images to get your points across.

The importance of critical thinking cannot be overstated. As an individual, you must make enhancing your critical thinking skills a priority. To do this, you can use proven strategies to enhance your critical thinking skills.
