Like most skills, anyone can develop critical thinking. But far from everyone can do it easily. Often on the way, there are all kinds of barriers and obstacles that impede the process. However, this should not stop you, because all of them can be overcome.
So what can stop you?
Reassessing Your Ability to ReasonĀ
Most people consider themselves as rational people and do not doubt the correctness and truth of their belief system, otherwise, they would simply not believe in what they believe. People are sure that they have knowledge and good reasons to act in a certain way.
But, despite the fact that this state of affairs concerns many of us, we often behave completely differently, because almost always think automatically. This is quite normal because this method is best suited for everyday life – putting on gloves or picking up a comb in our hands, we should not doubt that it is safe.
However, thinking this way, you can form bad habits with regards to thoughts and actions. Everyone who follows the path of least resistance will be confident in their true. But, prevailing in disputes, you can easily overestimate your ability to reason.
The ability to emerge victorious in a dispute does not at all guarantee the ability to operate with the best evidence. The dispute can be won due to the fact that the interlocutor could not recognize unconvincing arguments or simply decided to avoid confrontation.
Do not overestimate yourself: the lack of logic, inaccuracy and uncertainty only interfere with the development of critical thinking and abilities that allow you to professionally and competently communicate, work and learn.
Unwillingness to CritiqueĀ
Excitement in situations where you need to look at things critically is quite natural. But he does not need to give in. For example, in many educational institutions, criticism is part of the learning process, as an everyday exercise. Here you just need to understand that you can adapt to critical thinking only over time.
Invalid Criticism RatingĀ
Someone may think that criticism is a negative reaction, and when analyzing it, only negative aspects are taken into account. But in reality, criticism is also a definition of positive aspects, as well as effective and ineffective arguments.
Most people do not welcome criticism, because, in fact, this is a process with negative colouring. In the same way, many people try not to criticize, because they are afraid to create a reputation for themselves as not a very pleasant person.
The result is the avoidance of any kind of comments that the addressee may perceive as negative, and only positive ones are voiced. But this path does not lead to improvements and is unproductive. Only constructive criticism can lead to progress, improvement, and problem solving.
Lack of Practice, Strategies and MethodsĀ
Even developing critical thinking, many people do not understand what exactly needs to be done for this. The same skills that you have successfully used in school or communicating with friends may not be suitable for the professional field or for studying at a university. But you can learn everything, you just need to perform actions, and useful information will come as you study the theory.
