With second-order thinking, you allow yourself to look into a particular decision even before you decide to make it. Before doing something, you will want to ask yourself, “And then what?” What will you gain or lose after making a certain decision? Using the example above, before snacking on anything, you will mull over the aftermath effects of your decision. In this case, if you choose to snack on an unhealthy diet, you will think about the repeated effect of your action. Developing a habit of eating unhealthy dishes repeatedly will affect your body weight.
Second-order thinking will help you think critically about your decision. This means that you will take the best path that will lead you to success. The framework of the second-order thinking mode is something that can be practiced in your everyday decision-making process. Before doing anything, you should always take a step back and question yourself about the consequences of your actions. Besides considering the immediate outcomes, look into the near future. What will happen in a month or two after deciding to do something? This mental model will improve your ability to think critically.
