The Simplest Method of Preparation

For the simplest version of this formulation, start by using isopropyl alcohol (also known as rubbing alcohol), which is 99 percent (or higher).

Ingredients:

– 99 percent (or higher) isopropyl alcohol (also known as 99 percent rubbing alcohol)

– 100 percent pure aloe Vera gel

Other Materials:

– Plastic or glass bottle or container with a leak-proof lid or a pump cap top

– Metal or plastic funnel

– Bowl

– Wooden, metal, or plastic spoon or paddle

Proportions of Ingredients:

– You will need seven parts isopropyl alcohol.

– You will need three parts aloe Vera gel.

Step by Step Guide to Preparation

Step 1

Pour the seven parts of 99 percent isopropyl alcohol into the bowl. Be careful not to splash or spill the alcohol, as it can be extremely harsh on your skin. If you want, you can wear gloves during this and all the other steps.

Step 2

Pour the three parts of 100 percent aloe Vera gel into the bowl.

Step 3

Stir the mixture together thoroughly using the wooden, metal, or plastic spoon or paddle.

Step 4

Using the funnel, pour the mixture from the bowl into the empty bottle or container.

Step 5

Screw on the top of the pump cap as soon as possible to prevent the alcohol from evaporating.

The Simplest Method of Preparation in Other Words

If you do not want measurements in proportions and would rather have cups, follow the recipe below. This recipe makes 10 cups of hand sanitizer. If you want a different amount with this approximate concentration, just multiply or divide accordingly. Make sure that your bottle or container is large enough to contain the amount of hand sanitizer you want to make!

Again, start by using isopropyl alcohol that is 99 percent (or higher).

Ingredients:

– 99 percent (or higher) isopropyl alcohol (also known as 99 percent rubbing alcohol)

– 100 percent pure aloe Vera gel

Other Materials:

– Plastic or glass bottle or container with a leak-proof lid or a pump cap top

– Metal or plastic funnel

– Bowl

– Wooden, metal, or plastic spoon or paddle

Proportions of Ingredients:

– You will need 7 cups of isopropyl alcohol.

– You will need 3 cups of aloe Vera gel.

Step by Step Guide to Preparation

Step 1

Pour the 7 cups of 99 percent isopropyl alcohol into the bowl. Be careful not to splash or spill the alcohol, as it can be extremely harsh on your skin. If you want, you can wear gloves during this and all the other steps.

Step 2

Pour the 3 cups of 100 percent aloe Vera gel into the bowl.

Again, this version is the same as the most straightforward version but with the addition of hydrogen peroxide.

Note: If you can follow the measurements correctly, your final product will have an actual alcohol concentration of 71.998 percent v/v. However, you most likely will not get anywhere near that exact measurement, due to the limitations of your measuring cups. Only a very finely graduated cylinder could come close to replicating that alcohol content.

Again, start by using isopropyl alcohol that is 99 percent (or higher).

Ingredients:

– 99 percent (or higher) isopropyl alcohol (also known as 99 percent rubbing alcohol)

– 100 percent pure aloe Vera gel

– 3 percent hydrogen peroxide

Other Materials:

– Plastic or glass bottle or container with a leak-proof lid or a pump cap top

– Metal or plastic funnel

– Bowl

– Wooden, metal, or plastic spoon or paddle

Proportions of Ingredients:

– You will need 3 cups of isopropyl alcohol.

– You will need 1 cup of aloe Vera gel.

– You will need eight teaspoons of hydrogen peroxide.

Step by Step Guide to Preparation

Step 1

Pour the 3 cups of 99 percent isopropyl alcohol into the bowl. Be careful not to splash or spill the alcohol, as it can be extremely harsh on your skin. If you want, you can wear gloves during this and all the other steps.

Step 2

Pour the 1 cup of 100 percent aloe Vera gel into the bowl.

Step 3

Pour the eight teaspoons of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide into the bowl.

Step 4

Stir the mixture together thoroughly using the wooden, metal, or plastic spoon or paddle.

Step 5

Using the funnel, pour the mixture from the bowl into the empty bottle or container.

Step 6

Screw on the top of the pump cap as soon as possible to prevent the alcohol from evaporating.

Step 7

Place the bottle of hand sanitizer in quarantine for 72 hours before using it. This will allow enough time for the hydrogen peroxide to take effect and kill any bacterial spores which may have been present during the mixing process or which may exist inside the bottle. After 72 hours of quarantine, your hand sanitizer is ready for use.

The Simplest Method of Preparation

For the simplest version of this formulation, start by using isopropyl alcohol (also known as rubbing alcohol), which is 99 percent (or higher).

Ingredients:

– 99 percent (or higher) isopropyl alcohol (also known as 99 percent rubbing alcohol)

– 100 percent pure aloe Vera gel

Other Materials:

– Plastic or glass bottle or container with a leak-proof lid or a pump cap top

– Metal or plastic funnel

– Bowl

– Wooden, metal, or plastic spoon or paddle

Proportions of Ingredients:

– You will need three parts isopropyl alcohol.

– You will need 1-part aloe Vera gel.

Step by Step Guide to Preparation

Step 1

Pour the three parts of 99 percent isopropyl alcohol into the bowl. Be careful not to splash or spill the alcohol, as it can be extremely harsh on your skin. If you want, you can wear gloves during this and all the other steps.

Step 2

Pour the 1 part of 100 percent aloe Vera gel into the bowl.

The following is for those of you who like the simplest method of preparation but who would rather have concrete, measurable units than those mentioned above “3 parts, 1 part” proportional business. This recipe makes 4 cups of hand sanitizer. If you want a different amount, just multiply or divide accordingly.

The major flaw with the simplest method above is that it does not contain any hydrogen peroxide, which is used to inactivate and kill any bacterial spores that may be present during the mixing of the hand sanitizer or within the final container. The following method solves that problem (by adding just a bit of hydrogen peroxide).

If you do not have access to hydrogen peroxide, then the most straightforward method (above) will work just fine. However, if you want a hand sanitizer that is closer to the standards of the WHO and you can obtain hydrogen peroxide, then follow this recipe instead.

Note: This version of the hand sanitizer is quite like the formulation offered by the WHO, as it just eliminates the water from the formulation and replaces the glycerol with aloe Vera gel. Also, if you can follow the measurements correctly, your final product will have an actual alcohol concentration of 76.8 percent v/v.

Again, start by using isopropyl alcohol that is 99 percent (or higher).

Ingredients:

– 99 percent (or higher) isopropyl alcohol (also known as 99 percent rubbing alcohol)

– 100 percent pure aloe Vera gel

– 3 percent hydrogen peroxide

Other Materials:

– Plastic or glass bottle or container with a leak-proof lid or a pump cap top

– Metal or plastic funnel

– Bowl

– Wooden, metal, or plastic spoon or paddle

Proportions of Ingredients:

– You will need 4 cups of isopropyl alcohol.

– You will need 1 cup of aloe Vera gel.

– You will need ten teaspoons of hydrogen peroxide.

Step by Step Guide to Preparation

Step 1

Pour the 4 cups of 99 percent isopropyl alcohol into the bowl. Be careful not to splash or spill the alcohol, as it can be extremely harsh on your skin. If you want, you can wear gloves during this and all the other steps.

Step 2

Pour the 1 cup of 100 percent aloe Vera gel into the bowl.

Step 3

Pour the ten teaspoons of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide into the bowl.

– You will need four parts of isopropyl alcohol.

– You will need 1-part aloe Vera gel.

Step by Step Guide to Preparation

Step 1

Pour the four parts of 99 percent isopropyl alcohol into the bowl. Be careful not to splash or spill the alcohol, as it can be extremely harsh on your skin. If you want, you can wear gloves during this and all the other steps.

Step 2

Pour the 1 part of 100 percent aloe Vera gel into the bowl.

The following is for those of you who like the simplest method of preparation but who would rather have concrete, measurable units than those mentioned above “4 parts, 1 part” proportional business. This recipe makes 5 cups of hand sanitizer. If you would like a smaller or larger amount (1 cup or 10 cups, for example), simply divide or multiply the ingredient measurements accordingly. Just make sure that your bottle or container is large enough to contain the amount of hand sanitizer you want to make!

Again, start by using isopropyl alcohol that is 99 percent (or higher).

Ingredients:

– 99 percent (or higher) isopropyl alcohol (also known as 99 percent rubbing alcohol)

– 100 percent pure aloe Vera gel

Other Materials:

– Plastic or glass bottle or container with a leak-proof lid or a pump cap top

– Metal or plastic funnel

– Bowl

– Wooden, metal, or plastic spoon or paddle

Proportions of Ingredients:

– You will need 4 cups of isopropyl alcohol.

– You will need 1 cup of aloe Vera gel.

Although the formulations presented by the WHO are certainly effective in combatting the novel coronavirus, they may not be the best for your skin. Those formulations contain glycerol as a humectant to keep the alcohol from drying out your skin, but you may prefer the feel of a hand sanitizer that contains aloe Vera gel as an emollient (a substance which softens and conditions your skin).

Aloe Vera gel hand sanitizers are commercially available and used to be exceedingly common (until the novel coronavirus pandemic caused hand sanitizers across the country to go out of stock). So, if you are looking for a hand sanitizer recipe that yields a product with a more familiar feel than that of the WHO formulations, then you might want to consider the aloe Vera gel hand sanitizer recipes found in this chapter.

Also, the WHO formulations use tools and equipment that you may not have at your disposal. The graduated metric measuring cylinders and so forth necessary for the WHO
hand rubs are more commonly found in a science laboratory than in your kitchen at home. So, if all you have at home are some good old fashioned measuring cups (which probably use the United States customary units of cups, teaspoons, pints, gallons, etc.), you will probably not be able to replicate the exact measurements of the WHO formulations. In such a case, this article is your friend. Many of the formulations in this article will require far less exactitude than the WHO formulations.

The following formulations contain the steps and ingredients necessary to produce aloe Vera gel hand sanitizers with the following amounts of alcohol concentration by volume: 80 percent v/v, 75 percent v/v, 70 percent v/v, and 66.67 percent v/v. Remember that because your measurements are probably not as exact as they would be for the WHO formulations, the final product alcohol concentrations will also be less exact. For example, the recipes listed under the heading “80 Percent Aloe Vera Formulation” may be slightly less than 80 percent in terms of alcohol concentration.

Here are the amounts of the reagents which you will need in order to make 500 mL of the second formulation:

– You will need 375.75 mL of the 99.8 percent isopropyl alcohol.

– You will need 20.85 mL of the 3 percent hydrogen peroxide.

– You will need 7.25 mL of the 98 percent glycerol.

– You will need enough sterile distilled water or boiled cold water in order to fill the remainder of the bottle to the 500 mL mark (approximately 96.15 mL of water).

Step by Step Guide to the Preparation of 500 mL of Formulation 2

Step 1

You will first need to pour the 99.8 percent isopropyl alcohol into the 500 mL plastic or glass bottle with the stopper that has screw threading. Do this by placing the metal or plastic funnel on top of the bottle to ensure that none of the ingredients spill or splash out of the mixing container.

Step 2

You will then need to add the 3 percent hydrogen peroxide into the 500 mL bottle by using the measuring cylinder. Again, use the funnel to ensure that the addition of this product does not get messy.

Step 3

Next, you will need to add the 98 percent glycerol into the 500 mL bottle with the use of a measuring cylinder. Because glycerol is very sticky and viscous and will stick to the glass wall of the measuring cylinder, the cylinder ought to be rinsed with some of that sterile distilled water or cold boiled water and emptied again into the 500 mL bottle.

Step 4

You will then top up the 500 mL bottle with the sterile distilled water or the cold boiled water to the 500 mL mark.

Step 5

Now, place the stopper or top with screw threading on the 500 mL bottle to close it as soon after preparation as possible, in order to prevent the solution from evaporating.

Step 6

You will then mix the solution within your closed 500 mL bottle by shaking it gently. Do not attempt to use an electric mixer, because this may cause the mixture to explode.

Step 7

You should then divide the solution up into the final containers in which it will reside. For instance, if you intend to carry some hand sanitizer around with you, make sure that you have appropriately sized bottles for travel use.

Step 8

Place the bottles which are serving as the final containers of your hand sanitizer in quarantine for 72 hours before you plan to use them. This period will allow for any bacterial spores which are present in either the alcohol or the bottles to be destroyed by the hydrogen peroxide. Whenever you distribute the hand sanitizer into its final containers, those containers should be placed in quarantine for 72 hours before you use the hand sanitizer contained within them.

Note: a 500 mL bottle of hand sanitizer can theoretically be carried around in public. It is about the size of a small water bottle, so you might not find it too cumbersome. If you choose not to dispense the hand sanitizer from the 500 mL bottle into smaller containers, then the 500 mL bottle itself will serve as the final container, and you simply need to wait 72 hours before using the hand sanitizer. Just make sure that the bottle is leak-proof if you intend to carry it around in public.

– You will need enough sterile distilled water or boiled cold water in order to fill the remainder of the bottle to the 50 L mark (approximately 9615 mL of water).

Step by Step Guide to the Preparation of 50 L of Formulation 2

Step 1

You will first need to pour the 99.8 percent isopropyl alcohol into either the 50 L plastic tank or the 80 to 100 L capacity stainless steel tank. If the opening of your mixing container has a small mouth, avoid spilling any of the ingredients by placing the metal or plastic funnel in the opening of the container to ensure that none of the ingredients spill or splash out of the mixing container. However, if the opening of your mixing container is quite large, the funnel will be neither necessary nor useful. Just be careful when pouring your ingredients into the tank to make sure they do not splash out of the container and make a mess.

Step 2

You will then need to add the 3 percent hydrogen peroxide into the plastic or stainless-steel tank by using the measuring cylinder. Again, you will need to use the funnel only if your mixing container has a small opening.

Step 3

Next, you will need to add the 98 percent glycerol into the plastic or stainless-steel tank with the use of a measuring cylinder. Because glycerol is very sticky and viscous and will stick to the glass wall of the measuring cylinder, the cylinder ought to be rinsed with some of that sterile distilled water or cold boiled water and emptied again into the tank.

Step 4

You will then top up the plastic or stainless-steel tank with the sterile distilled water or the cold boiled water to the 50 L mark.

Step 5

Now, place the screw-top cap or the lid on the plastic or stainless-steel tank to close it as soon after preparation as possible, in order to prevent the solution from evaporating.

Step 6

You will then mix the solution within your plastic or stainless-steel tank by using a metal, wooden, or plastic paddle. Do not use an electric mixer, because this may cause the mixture to explode.

Step 7

You should then divide the solution up into the final containers in which it will reside. For instance, if you intend to carry some hand sanitizer around with you, make sure that you have appropriately sized bottles for travel use.

Here are the amounts of the reagents which you will need in order to make 10 L of the second formulation:

– You will need 7515 mL of the 99.8 percent isopropyl alcohol.

– You will need 417 mL of the 3 percent hydrogen peroxide.

– You will need 145 mL of the 98 percent glycerol.

– You will need enough sterile distilled water or boiled cold water in order to fill the remainder of the bottle to the 10 L mark (approximately 1923 mL of water).

Step by Step Guide to the Preparation of 10 L of Formulation 2

Step 1

You will first need to pour the 99.8 percent isopropyl alcohol into the 10 L plastic or glass bottle with the stopper that has screw threading. Do this by placing the metal or plastic funnel on top of the bottle to ensure that none of the ingredients spill or splash out of the mixing container.

Step 2

You will then need to add the 3 percent hydrogen peroxide into the 10 L bottle by using the measuring cylinder. Again, use the funnel to ensure that the addition of this product does not get messy.

Step 3

Next, you will need to add the 98 percent glycerol into the 10 L bottle with the use of a measuring cylinder. Because glycerol is very sticky and viscous and will stick to the glass wall of the measuring cylinder, the cylinder ought to be rinsed with some of that sterile distilled water or cold boiled water and emptied again into the 10 L bottle.

Step 4

You will then top up the 10 L bottle with the sterile distilled water or the cold boiled water to the 10 L mark.

Step 5

Now, place the stopper with screw threading on the 10 L bottle to close it as soon after preparation as possible, in order to prevent the solution from evaporating.

Step 6

You will then mix the solution within your closed 10 L bottle by either shaking it gently (if this is appropriate) or by using a metal, wooden, or plastic paddle to mix it. Do not use an electric mixer, because this may cause the mixture to explode.

Step 7

You should then divide the solution up into the final containers in which it will reside. For instance, if you intend to carry some hand sanitizer around with you, make sure that you have appropriately sized bottles for travel use.
