Mental Models in Physics

There are many mental models in physics that have varied applications in various systems and are widely applied in other disciplines as well. These models include; 

The Law of Reciprocity. 

This law of physics stipulates that for every action there is bound to be an equal and opposite reaction. This is a multi-disciplinary law that applies not only in physics but also in biology, human behaviour, and many other fields. We can use this law to evaluate and make decisions with the consequences of these decisions in mind.  

Life is a series of choices that we need to make on a daily basis. The sum total of these choices shapes our present behaviour and future outcomes. All the choices we make have consequences in both the short term and the long term. Using the law of reciprocity, we can make better choices by evaluating what the effects of our choices will be in the long run. 

Relativity. 

This theory has multiple applications in different contexts in physics. The most widely used concept from this law, however, is the fact that an individual is incapable of fully comprehending a system of which they are part. 

A person in a plane may not physically feel the motion of the plane but an observer can observe the movement that is occurring. 

Similarly, in personal situations when a person is in the middle of an event or situation, they cannot judge it from an objective perspective because they are immersed in it and can only see it from one perspective. To objectively judge a situation, we must first remove ourselves from it on a mental level and access it from an observer’s point of view. 

Thermodynamics

The law of thermodynamics is also known as the law of conservation of energy and it describes energy transfer within a system. This law stipulates that energy cannot be created or destroyed in a system but that it is simply transferred from one form to another.  

Velocity

Velocity refers to the measurement of speed that occurs in a particular vector or direction. The addition of vector or direction. Using this principle in our lives can help us map out our progress in different spheres, by having a clearly defined starting point and destination in terms of objectives, we can assess our progress. Being able to determine if you are making progress or not can aid you in making changes to ensure that you are on the path to achieving your objectives. 

Catalysts

A catalyst is defined as a substance that speeds up a chemical reaction but remains separate from the reaction itself. Catalysts can be found in everyday life situations as well as in science. Identifying catalysts that we can use in daily life to accelerate our progress and advance our goals can help us in attaining our objectives and accelerate the rate at which we are able to achieve them. 

Leverage

Many innovations in engineering have been based on the principle of leverage. Leverage is a principle that is used to identify means by which heavy loads can be lightened and in effect make work easier.  

Inertia

The law of inertia states that a body with no net force acting on it will either remain at rest or continue to move with uniform speed in a straight line. Inertia is a basic physical principle of motion. Inertia minimizes energy use by limiting motion and action.
